Jay, Livermore, and Livermore Falls have a long history rooted in manufacturing, including decades of work in the paper mills and shoe factories. These sectors provided stable, good-paying jobs that supported families and shaped the local economy. As these industries have closed or relocated elsewhere, the region has experienced significant job losses and a shift in available employment opportunities.
We must take practical steps to support job growth and long-term economic resilience in the tri-town region. These steps include:
Supporting existing employers by addressing workforce needs, transportation challenges, and local infrastructure that businesses rely on.
Encouraging new industries—such as clean energy, advanced manufacturing, outdoor recreation services, and remote-work compatible fields—to consider the region for investment.
Strengthening small businesses, which make up a significant portion of local employers, by improving access to state resources, technical assistance, and financing tools.
Expanding workforce training and education pathways, including partnerships with regional schools, community colleges, and career programs that align with the types of jobs growing in Maine.
Improving broadband, utilities, and transportation infrastructure so the area is competitive for employers who depend on reliable connectivity and modern facilities.
Exploring redevelopment opportunities for former mill sites to make them usable for new businesses, housing, community spaces, or emerging industries.
